Wilma Johanna Maria "Willy/Wil" Macdougall Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wilma Macdougall of West Kelowna on September 6, 2023 at the age of 65. She joins her beloved daughter, Meagan who passed away in January of 1992.

Wilma’s wisdom, kindness and wonderful sense of humour will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Wilma’s passing leaves to mourn her husband, Hugh; sons Cameron and Alexander; sister Yolande (Steve) Heggie and brother Terry (Karin) Nuyten. Auntie Wilma also leaves behind Aaron, Madison, Amanda, and Nicole.

Wilma was pre-deceased by her parents, Casey and Ann Nuyten and by her daughter, Meagan Macdougall.

Wilma was born in North Vancouver and grew up in the Green Timbers area of Surrey. She spent much of her early years playing with her close friends in the neighbourhood. Wilma loved the summer and enjoyed family holidays to Prince Rupert and travelling by train to Montreal to visit relatives. Wilma spent many long summer days listening to her transistor radio, hanging out with friends and playing Yahtzee in the back yard. The family dog, Snoopy was usually close by. She loved to watch scary movies with her mom and sister.

Wilma attended Green Timbers elementary, Johnston Heights junior secondary and North Surrey senior secondary schools. She was popular and had many friends. Wilma was Student Council President in Grade 10. Wilma loved music and singing. A highlight at North Surrey was the school band and choir trip to Germany. Wilma graduated high school in 1976.

Wilma’s first job was as a cook at Oliver’s restaurant in the Guildford Mall during her last two years of high school and for two years after graduating. Wilma then worked in the office at Valleyview Memorial Gardens for 10 years. Wilma advanced to become regional secretary and enjoyed the responsibility and challenges of that position.

Wilma met the love of her life, Hugh in 1976 and they were married in 1977. In 1988 they were blessed with their first child, Meagan. She brought great joy to them and to our family, but at the age of two, Meagan was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. The next year and a half was a struggle to save Meagan’s life. Meagan touched so many but her passing left a lasting void in Wilma’s life.

Wilma and Hugh were blessed with two wonderful sons, Cameron and Alexander. Cameron was born in 1990 and Alexander in 1993. A year after Alexander was born, Wilma and Hugh moved the family to West Kelowna to start a new life. Wilma was a loving, caring mother and she took great pride and satisfaction from her sons. They thrived in West Kelowna and grew up to be fine men and devoted sons.

Despite suffering from chronic illness and pain in her later years, Wilma always maintained her grace and dignity. She possessed great strength of character and a positive spirit that inspired us.

Wilma passed away in Penticton hospital surrounded by her family.

Wilma was a loving, devoted wife and mother. She was a loving sister and daughter. Wilma was a dear and cherished friend to many. We loved Wilma and will miss her so much.

As an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Wilma to BC Children's Hospital or Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
