It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Pierre Lucien Bourbonnais, on January 20, 2021 at the age of 92.
Pierre leaves us to mourn and to celebrate a life well-lived, his wife of 43 years, Janie (Thompson), and children, Lise, Michele, Nicole, Suzanne (Joe Gazzard), Shane (Lynn), Ryan (Christie) and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pierre, known to all as Papa, was born to Charles and Judith in Montreal, Quebec. The Bourbonnais’ were very active and loved to play hockey, go skiing, and spend time outdoors as a family. In 1948, he joined the military and gained his civil engineering certificate. The military brought Papa to Calgary, Alberta, where he met and married the mother of his four girls.
Papa’s career in civil engineering had him travelling across Canada and the world. A contract with Lafarge brought him back to Calgary, Alberta where he reconnected with Janie and their romance began. They were married in 1977 and Papa, Janie, and the boys continued to travel for Papa’s career, from Montreal, San Clemente, California, Calgary, and finally settling/retiring in West Kelowna. There Papa and Janie joined the Yacht Club and enjoyed boating, festivities, and meeting their lifelong friends.
We all remember Papa’s wit, his youthfulness, his kooky way of telling jokes, as well as his love of dancing and cooking. He was a true gentleman; sensitive and endearing.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brookhaven Care Centre for their care and compassion towards Papa.
Donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Society of BC.
