Phyllis Sundstrom Obituary

The Sundstrom family announces the passing of Phyllis Ann Sundstrom (Derickson) on June 12, 2024. She was a wife, mother, Nanni, sister, aunt, and friend to many.

Phyllis was born on February 18th, 1950, in Brewster, Washington, to Richard and Caroline Derickson. She passed away peacefully at Kelowna Hospice House with her loving family by her side.

Phyllis is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart, Larry Sundstrom; her son, Mike and grandchildren Jakob and Gabriel; son, Wes (Tiffany) and grandchildren Alyssa and Rylan; brothers, Raymond (Carol), Harold (Blanca), and Steve; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Caroline Derickson, sister Joan, and brother George.

Phyllis was raised in Westbank and was a member of Westbank First Nation. Phyllis spent the vast majority of her career working in the Education Dept of Interior Health at Kelowna General Hospital. She was recognized many times for her strong work ethic and years of perfect attendance. Her years of residing in Peachland resulted in lifelong friendships and community involvement.

In her retirement, Phyllis worked with Westbank First Nation serving as an elder advisor and was a strong presence on various committees including economic development, self-government, housing and employment.

In her spare time, she became a very skilled and dedicated quilter and was an active and valued member of the Peachland Pincushion quilting guild. She loved to garden and won several awards for her beautiful Roses. There was always room for one more at her table. She leaves a legacy of kind, loving, positive, matriarchal leadership within her family and community. She will be dearly missed.

Thank you to all who have expressed their support and love to the family. A very special Thank You to Central Okanagan Hospice House for the love, dedication, compassion and care they gave to Phyllis and her family through this difficult journey.
