Olive was born in Kelowna, BC, the daughter of Francis Arthur and Florence Mae Dobbin. She is survived by her 3 children Ray Rumley (Stella Fairhall), Janice Phelps (Dale), Reg Rumley (Paula), 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, sisters Florence Edwards, Mary White, Pam Weseen, sister-in-law Shirley Dobbin and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers Frankie, Clifford, Lorne and sister Doreen Dobbin.
Olive grew up on the Dobbin ranch and enjoyed working with her Dad. She had a great love for animals and especially her horses that she spent many hours riding the range.
She was a WWII veteran joining the RCWAF in 1941. She was stationed in Trenton, Ontario where she met and married her husband, Mickey Rumley. After the war they returned to Westbank in 1948. She continued to help her Dad on the ranch while working in the Westbank Packing House. She continued her education with several business courses and worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper retiring at the age of 65.
She was a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 288 (Westbank) from the day the legion opened in 1989. In 1992 and until 2001 she held various positions on the Executive, one of which was Service Officer for many of those years. In 2001, Olive received her Life membership for her past service to the Legion and to commemorate her 100th birthday.
Later in life she met Frank Speers, also a veteran, and they spent many happy hours together going to the Legion, enjoying family gatherings, and travelling.
Olive loved to garden. Some of her happiest hours were spent tending her flowers. One of her other favourite pastimes was playing her piano or her organ. She took organ lessons after retiring and bought herself an organ. She loved her family and always welcomed the company of anyone who cared to drop by.
Olive lived independently until moving to The Village at Smith Creek in 2017 where she continued to reside until she passed.
Olive had some very special friends who loved to visit. A special thank you to Peggy Millington for all of the time you spent with Mum.
We would like to thank Dr Banwell and Dr Burnett for the excellent care they provided Mum. Also, thank you to the staff at The Village at Smith Creek for their love and compassion during her years there and the Kelowna General Hospital for the wonderful care she received during the final week of her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
A Celebration of Life will be held of Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Westbank Lions Community Centre, 2466 Main Street, West Kelowna, BC.
