Donald Froom Obituary

Born and raised in Manitoba, he moved his family to BC in 1966. Don, as he was known by those who loved him, is survived by his wife, Beverly, and his 4 children, Kim, Colleen (husband Shaun), Graham (wife Destiny), Christopher (wife Jocelyne) and grandchildren, Don, (wife Shiona) Marshall, Shyloe (husband Frank), Dusty, Cole, Ericka, Cadence, Eden and Jacob and great grandchildren, Dakota, Sierra, Parker and Scarlet.

Mr. Froom, as he was known by many of his chemistry students, was a teacher for 35 years ending his career in the Okanagan Valley. For the last 15 years of his career, he job shared his position with fellow teacher Larry Jensen. By then he was operating a mobile dimension sawmill and was cutting oversized logs for Gorman’s mill. He heated both homes in Glenrosa and Traders Cove with the wood he milled. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who loved to canoe, kayak and hunt. He coached girls basketball and cross country skiing. He built many of the existing trails at Telemark in West Kelowna.

Don was raised in the United Church and was chair of the board at St. Paul’s United church in Kelowna. Once moved to Glenrosa in 1972, attended Westbank United where he chaired the board and was instrumental in the construction of an addition to the church. He was involved in Westbank United support of Hope for the Nations educating children in Nepal. He worked in Ministry and Personnel and spent many hours troubleshooting in this position.

He moved to Traders Cove in 1990 and was instrumental in the amalgamation of the existing Wilson’s Landing Fire Department with Traders Cove Fire protection.

Don loved to sing and was one of the founding members the Kelowna International choir which travelled to Europe for the liberation celebration in Holland.

There are countless family members in the Valley and beyond who will be affected by his death. Anyone who had opportunity to meet our Father was blessed in that meeting. He was strong, persistent, kind and incredibly accepting. We are crushed by his demise. So, in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s society, so his family can continue their Father’s legacy and use the Science that drove him to be the teacher he was, to bring answers to the pain others feel when dealing with the disease called Alzheimer’s.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Central Okanagan United Church, 721 Bernard Ave, Kelowna BC V1Y 6P6.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
