Devon Thomas Daniel Smit

June 16, 1977 ~ April 23, 2023 (age 45) 45 Years Old

Obituary

Devon Thomas Daniel Smit was born in Kelowna, BC on June 16, 1977. He graduated from G.E. High School in Winfield.

In his early 20s, Devon was diagnosed with schizophrenia, an often misunderstood & evolving condition that left him unable to fully fit into society. Devon was an intelligent & fiercely curious person; even though his mental was an issue, he often challenged himself. He explored many interests and utilized the programs and resources offered by Interior Health.

Devon had some opportunities to travel. He enjoyed the time spent on his grandda Colin’s sailboat “The Welsh Lady" in Victoria, BC. He'd also flown across the Atlantic to see his father’s relatives in Delft, Netherlands.

As a youth, Devon's adventurous spirit took himself, his siblings, and friends, into the wilderness of early Kelowna & Lake County. Devon loved his family, & their well-being meant the world to him. He always had great concern for their health as he was intimately familiar with the harsher dangers of the world. Devon’s struggles with substance addictions claimed his life on April 22, 2023.

Devon was predeceased by members on both of his parents sides. He is survived by his mother MaryAnne Hopewell-Smit, and his sisters; Jennifer (her son Aidan) and Nina (her 3 children). Also many other family members around the world.

We send a grateful thank you to the people & services who have helped Devon over the years, especially those at Interior Health & the John Howard’s Society.  A special heartfelt thank you to Grandmere Suzanne Moreau for looking out for, & keeping us updated on him.
