Arnold Dyck

Arnold Dyck

Born August 11, 1918 in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan, he spent his early years with his parents, Abe and Margaret Dyck, and grandparents on the family farm. The farm was lost in the early Depression and the family moved to Swift Current. Arnold was an innovative child and found many ways to earn a few cents - selling rabbit skins, melting down lead from discarded batteries, working on his uncle's farm, doing deliveries. Eventually, Arnold landed a job at McIntosh Furniture where he began fixing, refinishing, upholstering and even building furniture.

In 1940 he married Eleanore Hadler and the same year enlisted in the Air Force. After the war they remained in Vancouver where their son Stannard was born. Early in the 1950's, they relocated to Edmonton where, for over a decade, he was employed by Barrington Woodworks.

The family returned to Swift Current in 1963 and Arnold joined his brothers Alvin and Harry in a meatpacking business. Many busy, happy years were spent there with family and friends. He was a wonderful cook...his turkey, roast beef, stews and goulash were perfection!

As Stan married and grandchildren arrived, Arnold was very involved in their lives, proud of every milestone. He loved spending time at their Beaver Flat cottage, watching the kids motor bike and learning to waterski, or just sitting on the deck enjoying the view of Lake Diefenbaker. Their only child Stan passed away unexpectedly in 1992, leaving the family devastated. In 1996, Arn and Elly made their final move, this time to Sun Village in West Kelowna where brother Harry and his wife Frankie, and Elly's brother, Vic lived. Eleanore passed away at the Village of Smith Creek Care Home in 2008 and Arnold remained there, lovingly cared for by family and staff. His brother Harry visited almost every day, often with goodies that Frankie had prepared. They did his laundry and took him for outings. We are very grateful to them.

August 11 was Arnold's 100th birthday. All the family gathered for a memorable afternoon, looking at photo albums, enjoying an impromptu concert by grandson Jonathan, and a family meal. 100 mini cupcakes were served to staff, patients and family. He passed away November 18, a child of God, confident in his faith.

Arnold was predeceased by his parents Abram and Margaret Dyck, his wife Eleanore, son Stannard, siblings Adina, Walter, Alvin and Jake. He is survived by brother Harry (Frances); daughter-in-law Beverley; grandchildren, Haland (Louise), Karmyn, and Jonathan; great -grandchildren, Julien, Ashley, and Aurora.
